Fabrication of heavy gauge Particle Accelerator Base Weldment for the Scientific Research Industry
Chicago Metal Fabricators was approached by a client in the scientific research industry to fabricate base weldments for particle accelerators. We first plasma cut all the A36 steel parts with a Messer 400 amp high definition bevel plasma cutter.
Then, utilizing a Fanuc Large Scale Robotic Weld System and Pama Speedram Horizontal Bar, we welded and machined the 14′ long, 4′ wide and 2′ high, base weldments. All of this was done while holding tightest tolerances of +/-.001 throughout the entire process.
The weldments were then stress relieved, abrasive blasted and painted. 180 of the 9,500 lbs weldments were thoroughly inspected, tested and delivered.
